In a production filled with music, dance, and
creative vision, six-time Grammy Award nominee Nnenna Freelon
pays tribute to the legendary Billie Holiday in her critically
acclaimed show "Blueprint of a Lady: The Once and Future
Life of Bille Holiday."
The project was conceived by Freelon and choreographer Ronald
K. Brown, who, along with the dance company Evidence, gave new
life to the Holiday-associated songs. Beloved songs such as "God
Bless The Child," "All of Me," and "Strange
Fruit" are heard and seen like never before, with Freelon,
her quintet, and Evidence interpretting them with sincere artistic
vision and inventiveness.
Fueled by Freelon's dynamic vocals and her driving band, the
dancers of Evidence jump, twist, leap, and groove to the music,
giving it flesh and vigor. Each song is a story told through
the movement of Freelon's voice in the dancers. Filled with energy,
sensuality, and beauty, "Blueprint of a Lady" is a
production like no other.
"If you copy, it means you're working without any real
feeling. No two people on earth are alike, and it's got to be
that way in music or it isn't music." Living by the words
of Billie Holiday herself, Freelon reinvents the idea of a tribute.
Says Freelon, "Sometimes when you do a tribute, people
think, 'Well, gee, you don't sound much like her.' It's not that
kind of tribute. It's a tribute to what she stood for." Drive,
confidence, pain, success, struggle, heartache, sin, forgiveness
-it's all there for the audience to experience. Freelon and Evidence
don't shy away from the dark side of the legedary Holiday, they
shed light on it, giving meaning and perspective to the good
and bad times of Holiday's life.
The tough-to-please audience at the legendary Apollo Theater
in New York sure loved it, giving "Blueprint of a Lady" two
standing ovations. The combination of international jazz star
Nnenna Freelon and the brilliant choreography Ronald K. Brown
make for one spectacular production.
Says Freelon, "I hope Billie is smiling on us. I kind of
feel her on my shoulder saying, 'You go girl.'"
