Master class

Featuring Nnenna Freelon and Mike Garson

The ensemble will explore the music, life and times of Duke Ellington.  This is an ideal opprotunity for students to learn about one of America's greatest jazz musicians.  Mike and Nnenna, joined by the DTD ensemble will discuss such topics as:

Music - How it was created; What is Harmony Melody, Rhythm

Jazz- Waht is Jazz; The history of jazz

Duke Ellington - Who was this jazz legend; What made his music so special; How it is relavant to today and these performers


Faith-based workshop "Come Sunday"

Featuring Nnenna Freelon and Mike Garson

Mike and Nnenna are joined by select DTD cast members for this workshop.  "Come Sunday" explores the spiritual side of Duke Ellington's music.  Heavily influenced by spirituals and church music, "Come Sunday" was premiered at Carniege Hall by the Duke Ellington Orchestra in 1943.  This workship will focus on the relationship between jazz and faith.


*Additional clinics, workshops, and master classes available for smaller groups or in different configurations. Also available: "Dreaming the Duke" with Symphony conducted in conjunction with educational activities.
